Should I test the water during cycling?

  • Yes! Testing your water during cycling is important for the health of your fish!
  • When should I test?
    • Test your tank every other day while cycling for ammonia, nitrite or nitrate, appropriate to where you are in the three phases of cycling.
    • Test your tank for pH, ammonia and nitrites any time that you suspect that your fish are showing the signs and symptoms of ammonia or nitrite poisoning or drastic pH change; e.g. gasping at the surface, rapid gill breathing, bleeding around the gills, darting about the tank, hiding, sluggish behavior, poor appetite and/or refusal to eat.
