Testing for nitrites

  • Test for nitrite every other day at the end of the ammonia phase and through the nitrite phase of cycling.
  • Test for nitrite any time your fish are showing the distress of nitrite poisoning (e.g. gasping at the surface, rapid gill breathing, darting about the tank, hiding, sluggish behavior, poor appetite and/or refusal to eat) and take corrective action!
  • When the nitrites are elevated and your fish are behaving normally, that is, they have normal activity, normal appetite and there are no signs of disease; then no corrective action is required.
