Testing for ammonia

  • Test for ammonia every other day during the ammonia phase of cycling.
  • Test for ammonia any time your fish are showing the distress of ammonia poisoning (e.g. gasping at the surface, rapid gill breathing, bleeding around the gills, darting about the tank, hiding, sluggish behavior, poor appetite and/or refusal to eat) and take corrective action!
  • Any measurable ammonia is harmful to fish. It must be taken care of quickly and returned to zero!
  • When using AmQuel® or AmQuel Plus®, use only a salicylate-based ammonia tester, such as Aquarium Pharmaceutical’s two bottled ammonia tester, to get an accurate reading. If you use other ammonia testers that use the Nessler Reagent when using AmQuel®or AmQuel Plus®, the ammonia readings will be falsely positive, that is, showing an ammonia level that is not really there.
