Corrective action for nitrites!

  • When the nitrites are elevated and your fish are behaving normally, that is, they have normal activity, normal appetite and there are no signs of disease; then no corrective action is required.
  • When the nitrites are elevated and your fish are showing the distress of nitrite poisoning (e.g. gasping at the surface, rapid gill breathing, darting about the tank, hiding, sluggish behavior, poor appetite and/or refusal to eat), then perform a 10% water change without disturbing the gravel and repeat until fish behavior returns to normal or the nitrite level measures zero, which ever happens first.
  • A one-time only addition of one teaspoon of salt per every 10 gallons of water will help to reduce the toxic effects of nitrites on fish. Do not let the salt sprinkle onto the fish. Dissolve the salt in a small amount of tank water first and then add back to the tank.
  • Nitrite toxicity blocks normal oxygen uptake at the gills by forming methemoglobin. Salt (sodium chloride) is beneficial in easing the effects of spiking nitrites because salt’s chloride ions compete with the nitrite for transportation across the fish’s gills, lessening the nitrite’s bad effects.
  • Withholding food for a day or two will also help to lower the amount of toxic nitrite.
  • AmQuel Plus® used at the correct dosage can be used to detoxify nitrites.
