Corrective action for ammonia!

  • Any measurable ammonia is harmful to fish. It must be taken care of quickly and returned to zero!
  • Ammonia poisoning burns the gills and sensitive mucous membranes of the skin, mouth and intestines and even the cornea covering the eye.
  • Using AmQuel® at the rate of one teaspoon (or one capful) per every 10 gallons of water (or 10 drops per gallon) will neutralize 1 ppm of ammonia. Retest water for ammonia in 2 hours. Repeat as needed.
  • If you are unable to use AmQuel® , and your fish are showing the distress of ammonia poisoning (e.g. gasping at the surface, rapid gill breathing, bleeding around the gills, darting about the tank, hiding, sluggish behavior, poor appetite and/or refusal to eat), then perform a 10% water change without disturbing the gravel and repeat until fish behavior returns to normal or the ammonia level measures zero, which ever happens first.
  • Withholding food for a day or two will also help to lower the amount of toxic ammonia.
