Prime™

  • Prime™ converts toxic ammonia to a non-toxic yet still usable form for cycling.
  • A salicylate-based ammonia tester, such as Aquarium Pharmaceutical's two-bottled ammonia tester must be used to get accurate results. A Nessler-based ammonia tester will produce false positive results for ammonia.
  • Prime™ should be used rather than AmQuel® by those fishkeepers who have water with a KH (carbonate hardness) of less than 4 dKH, typically found in soft, acidic (pH less than 7.0) water. Your local fish store will usually test your water for KH for free.
  • Prime™ also will detoxify nitrites and nitrates, though only at higher dosages. Never exceed 5 times the usual dosage.
  • Nitrite and nitrate testers will produce true readings, though when Prime™ is used at higher dosages, such as up to 5 times the usual dosage to detoxify nitrites and nitrates, the nitrite and nitrate levels will test out lower than what they really are in the tank. Therefore, the amount of detoxified nitrite and nitrate cannot be measured.
  • An odor of sulfur is normal when using Prime™.
