AmQuel®

  • It is recommended to use AmQuel® as a water conditioner during cycling because it changes toxic ammonia into a form that is non-toxic to your fish, but one that the growing “cycle” bacteria can still use. Not all water conditioners work this way and instead bind to ammonia, making it unusable and therefore, stops the cycling process… so, accept no substitutes!
  • Use only a salicylate-based ammonia tester, such as Aquarium Pharmaceutical’s two bottled ammonia tester, to get an accurate reading.
  • If you use an ammonia tester that uses the Nessler Reagent when using AmQuel®, then the ammonia readings will be falsely high.
  • Since ammonia is so poisonous to fish and because you have the ability to detoxify it by using AmQuel®, the ammonia level should always read zero.
  • If your water's KH (aka carbonate hardness/alkalinity) is less than 4 dKH (71 ppm CaCO2), then the water will be subject to pH crashes when using AmQuel. Instead, use Prime or AmQuel with Buffers. Your local fish store might measure your KH for free.
